What Is a Ton Of Air Conditioning?

Your air conditioner is a 3-Ton system; that sounds very heavy!

Definition of a Ton of Cooling:
A ton is the cooling capacity of an air conditioning system. One ton is equal to the amount of heat required (288,000 Btu) to melt one ton of ice in 24 hours. A one-ton air conditioner is rated at 12,000 Btu per hour (288,000/24).

Pictured below is what you may see on the side of your air conditioner or heat pump.

Model Number

The model number will typically show you the size of the system. This model number in the picture is RHE36A2D, so this will show you that there is 36,000 BTU’s of cooling capacity and you know now that there are 12,000 BTU’s in a ton so, 12,000 X 3 = 36,000 BTU’s equals a 3-ton system.

Typical residential systems vary from 1.5-Ton to 5-Ton capacity with the average home being a 3-Ton system. The systems step up by 1/2-Ton increments until you reach the 4-Ton capacity and then the next step is a 5-Ton system.

It’s also important to know that the indoor unit should be properly matched to give you the best efficiency and comfort level for your home. Only a trained Comfort Specialist can properly size your complete comfort system to ensure your family’s safety, comfort, and energy savings.

How to properly size an HVAC System

Consequences of Wrong Size HVAC SystemWhether your system is working but not keeping up, your electric or gas bills are steadily getting higher, the compressor or blowers are getting so noisy that it’s disturbing your home, or you just feel it’s time to upgrade, you will need to make sure the new system you have installed is properly sized for your home and family’s comfort needs.

Rules of Thumb

To determine how to reach all of your home comfort needs you will need a professional to complete a “load calculation.” Getting accurate heating and cooling load calculations is vitally important for proper HVAC system design. A home’s construction and load calculations will dictate the size of the HVAC system needed in a home to obtain optimal comfort and efficiency. The consequences for choosing the wrong-sized system can be severe: noisy operation, inability to keep your family comfortable, a failure to maintain proper moisture control, inefficient operation, and failure – increased cost.

Determining a house’s load depends on a number of variables, such as the climate zone, size of the house, directional orientation, heat gain or loss due to the quality of insulation, window and door construction — to name a few.

Once you have the total heat and cooling load calculated you will need to make sure that the ductwork connected to this new system is sized properly and sealed properly. Duct sizing and design is often overlooked by contractors and can result in unnecessary high energy bills.
